Overview

Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, popularly known as the Pink City, is also among the three top destinations visited in India, the other two being Delhi and Agra. Collectively they are known as the Golden Triangle. Jaipur is a heritage city and also modern India’s first planned city. It was the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Jaipur. The modern city was founded by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber in 1727. Most buildings in Jaipur are built of pink stucco in imitation of sandstone, giving it its distinct color.

Jaipur is also a delight for shoppers and foodies. Rajasthani cuisines and various street foods of India are available besides international cuisines at luxury hotels. Its markets specialise in various products e.g. Jahri Bazaar deals only in jewelry. Similarly there are textile markets and crafts markets.

City Palace

City Palace is among the most imposing buildings of Jaipur. Built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of the Kachhwaha clan, the City Palace is a massive complex occupying nearly one seventh of the area of the city of Jaipur. The City Palace is a seven storey complex. Numerous palaces, temples, courtyards, gardens, pavilions and other buildings can be found inside the complex. Built according to the tradition of those times, it had a separate zenana section for the ladies. Some of the must visit sections of the Palace are Chandra Mahal or the Moon Palace, Mubarak Mahal, Badal Mahal or Palace of Clouds, Shri Govind Temple and City Palace Museum.

Jantar Mantar

The famous Jantar Mantar is one of the five astronomical observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh II who had a keen interest in astronomy and other sciences. Built from 1727 to 1733, Jantar Mantar is a collection of astronomical instruments built of stone and marble. There are fourteen devices that are used to measure the movement of heavenly bodies. These devices have captivated the interest of architects, artists and art historians due to their uniqueness and accuracy.

Albert Hall Museum

Albert Hall is the oldest museum in the state of Rajasthan. Designed by Colonel Sir Swinton Jacob in 1876, it was created in time to greet King Edward VII as Prince of Wales on his visit to India and opened to public ten years later. Situated in the gardens of lovely Ram Niwas Bagh in Jaipur, this museum has an exceptional collection of rare articles on display that include textiles, carpets, paintings, metal and wood crafts, pottery, arms and weapons, flora and fauna, toys, dolls and even an Egyptian Mummy from the Ptolemaic era.

Amer Fort

Amber Fort was built by Raja Man Singh of the Kachhwaha clan of Rajputs. A mere 11 km from Jaipur, Amber used to be the capital of the Jaipur estate, until it was shifted to Jaipur city. The Amber Fort is a sprawling complex on top of a hill, with numerous palaces, gardens, temples and other structures inside. It is a fine example of Rajput architecture. The Amber Fort overlooks the Maotha Lake and is reflected beautifully in its calm waters. An elephant ride is the most enjoyable way of reaching the hill top to access the Fort.

Hawa Mahal

The Palace of Winds or Hawa Mahal is a beautiful red sandstone building rising five storey high. The palace was made to allow the ladies of the court to view the life of the city from behind purdah. Hawa Mahal is the most famous landmark of Jaipur, recognized by the 953 windows on its facade. The tiny windows with lattice work provide the much needed ventilation and give a pyramid like outline to the building.
