A town existing since the medieval times, Kota has kept up its march into modernity. Once a city of forts, palaces and crafts, it is now also a city of education institutions and small scale industries.

Existing as long back as the 12th Century, Kota as first a part of the principality of Bundi, ruled by the Hada clan. Later in the seventeenth century, Kota became separate and also was recognized for Rajput gallantry during this period.

Kota is known for its distinct style of painting that finds favor with art connoisseurs the world over. Besides painting, Kota is known for its fine Kota Doriya saris that are light as the breeze

Jag Mandir

Jag Mandir is a small and beautiful palace in Kota. It is made on an island inside an artificial lake called Kishore Sagar. Kota is a town with ancient history. Lying on the banks of the Chambal River, it is most well known for its distinct school of miniature paintings and its saris. Kishore Sagar was made in 1346 AD by Prince Dher Deh of Bundi. Jag Mandir is a charming red-sandstone monument surrounded by the calm waters of the lake. A boat-ride in the lake and an excursion to the nearby Keshar Bagh famous for its royal cenotaphs are a delightful way to spend time in Kota.

Darrah Wildlife Sanctuary

Darrah Wildlife Sanctuary is the place to go to, to see wolf, cheetah, nilgai, deer and wild boar. Darrah is spread over an area of 250 sq. kms and is located a mere 50 kms. away from Kota. Darrah is a hilly and thickly forested sanctuary. It used to be the royal hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Kota. Although this sanctuary is open from October to June, the best time to visit is from February to May due to the pleasant weather and abundance of water and plant life that attracts the animals out into the open.
